Damen Shipyards Group has unveiled the SOV 7017 E, the fully electric Service Operations Vessel (SOV) for offshore wind farm maintenance. With a length of 70 meters and offshore charging capabilities, it marks a significant step towards emissions reduction. To address the challenges of offshore charging, Damen partnered with MJR Power & Automation, developing a motion-compensated gangway system controlled from the wheelhouse for safe and efficient connection to turbines or substations. The charging occurs in a low-power DP mode, ensuring energy efficiency. The vessel's 15MWhr lithium iron phosphate battery enables a full day of operations, with the option of conventional diesel propulsion during power shortages. The vessel's design emphasizes safety, efficiency, and sustainability, presenting a collaborative opportunity for shipbuilders, operators, and wind farm developers to advance offshore energy production sustainability.

- The vessel is offered with 2 options of battery systems: >10 MWhr, suitable for approx. 75% full-electric operations > 15 MWhr, suitable for approx. 98% full-electric operations Batteries are of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) type, for high inherent safety and reduced ecological footprint. For backup, emergency and mobilization purposes 2x 1200 ekW HVO / diesel generators are provided which allow the vessel to continue all operations, even with depleted batteries. Charging is via a receptable on the vessel’s stern via a 4MW / 11kV connector. Transfer of a charge cable is by means of a manipulator, attached to the tip of the motion compensated gangway. Connecting / disconnecting is without manual intervention, fully controlled from the gangway’s operator position. Offshore charge stations, fully compatible with the vessel, are to be installed on offshore wind turbines and / or offshore substations and can be delivered via Damen’s specialized partners.
