On 13th March, IT International Telecom’s cable-laying vessel IT Intrepid entered Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen’s drydock number 2 for a special survey – her seventh to date. The vessel was built in the UK by Swan Hunter in 1989.

Return visitor

The special survey marks IT Intrepid’s third visit to DSV – a sign, says DSV Commercial Manager Jeroen Schotel that the yard is doing something right.

“We’re very happy to see IT International Telecom and IT Intrepid back in Vlissingen. It’s always nice to welcome a returning customer, it gives me the confidence that we have understood their needs correctly and delivered a service to their satisfaction.”

Large scope

The scope of work on the project, as may be expected for a vessel of IT Interpid’s age, was a large one. Typically, during a special survey, the vessel will receive paintwork and hull coating on the exterior. At this stage in the lifecycle, IT Intrepid was also ready to receive a fresh coating on the interior.

During the project, IT Intrepid was installed with a ballast water treatment system. The vessel is operational all over the world and is, therefore, often required to comply with robust environmental regulations.

All the vessel’s lifeboats were removed for full service, during which time the davits were inspected and overhauled. The thrusters were also removed for inspection and maintenance.

The cooling systems were overhauled, as was the deck machinery, including winches, and the stern sheave for the cables. Also the tailshaft seals were upgraded to the latest standard and with these removed, the yard was able to conduct in-line measurements of the propulsion line to ensure straightness.

Sturdy as steel

Other work included attention to steel in hard to reach places, as well as blasting and coating of the double bottom tanks.

This was, however, less than might have been anticipated in a vessel her age, says Project Manager Wim van de Velde. “She’s an old lady, but she’s sturdily built and very well maintained. IT Telecom invest a lot in keeping her in prime condition. It wouldn’t surprise me to see her still going in another 15 years!”
