In northern Italy, splendid beaches receive many holiday makers every year. Yet, these beautiful beaches need replenishment after each stormy winter season. The recurring dredge job was done by Costruzioni Cicuttin during March and April this year. Their DOP submersible dredge pump, type DOP350L, was attached to a Hitachi 470 excavator, which was then placed on a pontoon. The DOP and its cutter head were both hydraulically driven by a separate power pack.
Easy transfer
The pump-and-excavator dredging unit moved easily across the mining site with the equipment positioned on a pontoon. This submersible dredge pump used a Di 350 mm and 500 m long pipeline to reach the mainland. From there, the sand was redistributed using hydraulic excavators and dumpers to renourish all nine km of beach of Lignano Sabbiadoro, Pineta and Riviera. These are sought-after tourist resorts located some 60 km east of Venice.
Easy job
The project was quite straightforward and completed in a very short time. In fact, approximately 65.000 m³ of medium sand, which was extracted at a dredging depth of -4.5m, was pumped in just one month. The sand flowed easily due to the use of the cutter head. The sand reached the mainland where a large spoil field was created, where it was stored to dry. Two hydraulic excavators worked on the spoil field and loaded the eight dumper trucks which distributed the sand over the beaches. The overall average production was around 3.500 m³ each day.
