Supporting Damen Song Cam Employees after Typhoon Yagi
It is at times of crisis that the strength of our communities are tested. Recently many of our Damen colleagues faced unimaginable challenges and damage to their homes after their lives were disrupted by the super typhoon “Yagi”. In early September the superstorm swept across the northern parts of Vietnam. The most violent storm to have hit the country in over 30 years, it killed at least 120 people and left utter devastation in its wake.
Among those effected were at least 14 families and 126 of our Damen colleagues, who faced unimaginable challenges due to the typhoon. Unfortunately, two of our colleagues were injured while they were at home, one of whom sustained serious injuries, and many of our employees’ homes have been damaged, particularly the roofs.
Our shipyard, Damen Song Cam in Hai Phong, along with our joint-venture partner, Song Cam Shipyard, has sustained significant damage to its facilities, but fortunately there were no injuries and work has quickly resumed. Thanks to timely and effective measures, most of the production at the shipyard is back to normal, although there is still much to clear and repair.
However, our Vietnamese partner shipyard, Ha Long Shipbuilding Company in Ha Long (Quang Ninh Province), was closer to the eye of the typhoon and suffered more severe damage. Luckily, there were no reports of personal injuries there either, but we are still uncertain about the safety of the employees and their families at home.
With Foundation Damen Support, we are committed to providing essential supplies and support to those affected and to playing a part in rebuilding homes and restoring livelihoods to their former state.
Foundation Damen Support is more than just a foundation; we are one Family. As a family, we will rise above these challenges and continue to support each other. For every colleague in need, we will be there, offering a helping hand.
Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected.
